Why possum merino keeps you warmer for longer

Ever wondered how a sock or glove can be so light yet so warm? The secret is New Zealand possum fibre, which is naturally hollow. Those tiny air pockets trap your body heat and hold it close, so you get real warmth without any bulk or weight. Blended with merino wool, the fibre also gains softness, gentle stretch and a natural resistance to odour, which means your knitwear stays fresher for longer between washes. Possum merino is warm in the cold and breathable when you heat up, making it a lovely choice for everyday wear right through the cooler months. Because each piece is made to last, it is a kinder option for both your wardrobe and the planet. Ready to finish your winter layers from head to toe? Explore our cosy possum merino beanies to match.

FAQs

What is possum merino?

A blend of New Zealand possum fibre and merino wool. The possum fibre is very light and very warm, and the merino brings softness and stretch, so you get real warmth without bulk. Some pieces add mulberry silk as well, for a finer, smoother knit.

Are the possums harmed?

It's the question we're asked most in the shop, and a fair one. These are New Zealand brushtail possums, not our protected Australian possums. In New Zealand they were introduced, have no natural predators and are controlled to protect the native forest and birdlife. The fibre comes from that control work; possums aren't farmed for it. We know that isn't easy reading if you love possums, so we'd rather say it plainly.

Is everything here possum merino?

Most of it is, from Lothlorian, Native World and Kapeka among others. You'll also find merino silk, alpaca, cashmere merino and Australian-made merino socks, each named on the product so you know which fibre you're getting.

How long will it last?

With a little care, a long time. Customers tell us their possum merino socks and gloves see them through winter after winter, and one told us a pair bought ten years ago is still going. Follow the care label and they'll do the same for you.
