About Possum Fibre
Possum fibre is a unique, sustainable material sourced in New Zealand. The Australian possum, introduced to New Zealand without natural predators, has become an ecological pest - destroying native forests and threatening wildlife such as the Kiwi. Using possum fibre in knitwear helps reduce their impact while creating a luxuriously soft, lightweight and warm yarn.
Why We Love Possum Merino
From socks and gloves to a range of cosy knitwear, this unique blend of merino wool and possum offers a host of benefits:
- Unmatched Softness: New Zealand Possum fibre is the newest rare natural fibre in the world. It is one of the finest and softest fibres that nature produces, offering luxurious comfort.
- Lightweight Warmth: The hollow structure of possum fibres makes garments lightweight yet remarkably warm, perfect for cooler days.
- Durable Strength: When blended with Merino wool, possum fibers gain added strength, creating long-lasting, high-quality pieces.
Possum Merino knitwear is the perfect blend of warmth, comfort, and durability, and it's why we can't get enough of it!
Possum & Merino FAQS
What is Possum & Merino Wool?
Possum & Merino Wool is a luxurious yarn blend that combines merino wool with possum fibres. This unique pairing creates a fabric that is exceptionally soft, warm, and lightweight from the possum fibre, with strength from the merino wool.
Where does the fibre come from?
Both the merino wool and possum fibres are sourced in New Zealand. The possum fibre comes from the Australian possum, which was introduced to New Zealand and has no natural predators. Using their fur helps protect native forests and wildlife by controlling possum numbers.
What makes possum fibre so warm?
Possum fibres are naturally hollow, which means they trap air and insulate better than solid fibres.
How do I care for my Possum & Merino Wool items?
Wash gently in cool water (never hot!) using a wool detergent. Spin in the washing machine and dry flat. Do not tumble dry. For all possum products we recommend machine washing on a wool or delicate cycle over hand washing as this avoids the stretching/misshaping that can occur when agitating by hand in a tub. The washing machine spin cycle also sheds most of the water as opposed to squeezing this out by hand which again can distort the shape of the item depending on the technique employed.
Does it pill or wear out quickly?
Possum & Merino Wool is naturally resistant to pilling and very durable compared to many other soft fibres. With proper care, it will maintain its look and feel season after season.
Is Possum & Merino Wool eco-friendly?
Yes. In New Zealand, possums are considered a major pest, destroying around 17,000 tonnes of native forest every night. Using their fibre helps reduce this environmental impact while also creating a sustainable, natural alternative to synthetic fabrics.
